8 Alcohol and Sugar-Free Detox-Friendly Drinks

Detox-friendly drinks anyone?! January means simultaneously starting fresh and taking it back a notch. We celebrate the new year and our bodies by getting back to (ideally) the best of our pre-holiday patterns. Whether you are doing a full-on detox program, whole30, or recovering from holiday transgressions, you’re likely taking a break from alcohol, perhaps sugar and caffeine as well. But, that can leave a lifestyle and flavor void to fill —as in what are your beverage options? Filtered water and more filtered water? Even if you flavor it up with lemon, mint or ginger, liquid boredom will eventually set in.

Following are 8 health-supportive and detox-friendly drinks I’ll have on rotation this month. Some of these are warm drinks and some are cold. All are not only non-alcoholic and caffeine-free, but they have no refined sugar, don’t require a juicer and they’re rich in antioxidants and phytonutrients. Hopefully, these ideas will help you stick with your health resolutions —and get you through what might have been your coffee breaks or happy hours.

While apple cider vinegar is known to support gastrointestinal health and blood sugar balance, few people can handle more than a few tablespoons a day. With this beverage, you’ll actually enjoy taking your medicine! If you like ginger and cinnamon, you will love this drink.


Inspired by a similar commercial product, this invigorating beverage is a true tonic. It features turmeric in a base of coconut water, along with lemon and mint. With its bright color, dynamic blend of flavors and energizing botanicals, this tonic has become my most popular beverage recipes. Try it as an after work-out drink -or any time of day you want to give your health a turmeric turbo boost and inflammation knock-out.

GINGER-LEMON TEA – Quick and easy

This simple twist on classic ginger tea provides an immune boost and helps clear nasal and lung congestion. The honey option will also help soothe a sore throat. Don’t forget the cayenne! While normally drank hot, it is very refreshing served cold as well.

TURMERIC GOLDEN MILK – Soooo good and good for you!

Turmeric Golden Milk, the classic Ayurvedic beverage, is known for its many therapeutic benefits. While an array of Golden Milk recipes exist, the key ingredient is always turmeric, often with ginger, both of which are potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds. Start or end your day golden -or both!

GINGER and TURMERIC MEDICINAL TEA – My personal standby

This warming drink is a cross between turmeric golden milk and the ginger-lemon tea. I like to call it the G & T healer because this potent anti-inflammatory beverage is a very effective remedy for aches and pains. 

CHIA FRESCA – Quick and easy

Chia Fresca is simply lemon water with chia seeds and sweetener. This version is ever so lightly sweetened with liquid stevia or maple syrup. The chia seeds are a rich source of ALA omega-3 fatty acids and also contain fiber, protein, antioxidants, and minerals. But, the reason they are so dearly loved in drinks is their ability to absorb ten times their weight in water. This takes the fun factor on this drink up a notch -and will keep you not only hydrated but also full.

TEECCINO FRENCH ROAST – Available at health food stores

Teeccino is an organic, fair-trade brand herbal coffee alternative. It is an alkalizing blend of herbs, grains, carob and ramon seeds, a nutrient-rich food of the Maya civilization, that are roasted & ground to brew and taste like coffee, especially the French Roast flavor. Rich in inulin, this drink is a good source of gut-healthy prebiotics. Of note, if you are avoiding gluten, stick with the Dandelion flavors.

REFRIGERATOR TEA – Quick and easy

Have your favorite herbal tea ready to go 24×7! With refrigerator tea, the more gentle brewing process allows you to get stronger flavors without bitterness. Flavor options are endless. Or, mix it up with your favorite tea and add in some Chia seeds or some fresh ginger juice for added health benefits.


  • Sweetener: All of these recipes are only slightly sweetened to allow the other flavors to come through. I use SweetLeaf Sweet Drops, a liquid stevia sweetener for many of these drinks. I find it mixes very well, has no aftertaste, and produces a lightly sweet beverage with just a few drops. But, if you don’t care for stevia and aren’t trying to limit refined sweeteners, you could use small quantities of maple syrup, honey or coconut palm sugar.
  • Advance Preparation: You will notice I use a LOT of fresh ginger and turmeric in these recipes. I’m too impatient to grate either fresh every day, much less deal with a daily golden root clean-up. So, if you think you may want these drinks with any regularity, consider making ginger juice cubes or turmeric anti-inflammatory cubes. You’ll love the convenience. I’m never without them!
